Incorporating Motivational Interviewing in Practice

I’ve been exploring ways to engage patients more effectively during their visits, and I’ve stumbled upon motivational interviewing techniques… It’s fascinating how a few simple questions can shift the conversation and help patients feel more empowered about their oral health. Have any of you tried incorporating this into your work; would love to hear your experiences or any tips you have.

I’ve been using motivational interviewing with my patients for a while now, and it’s amazing how just asking, ‘What are your goals for your dental health?’ can really change the dynamic. It encourages them to take ownership of their care, which is exactly what we want. Just be prepared for a few who might be hesitant to engage — it takes some practice to get comfortable with the approach.
